Pure & Gentle

Plastic Mitigation FAQ

Reducing plastic is an essential part of what we do

Pure & Gentle believes in products that are good for the planet. We formulate our products using plant-based ingredients that are 100% biodegradable. And we don’t use chemical agents such as phosphates, dyes, or nitrates, replacing these harmful toxins in our formulations with natural ingredients.

In addition to our products being safe and non-toxic, they’re also developed in concentrate formulation. This means we don’t add water to our laundry detergents, dish soaps, shampoos, or household cleaners. Pure & Gentle minimizes plastic waste and the shipping burden as an essential part of our business. In fact, we’ve refined our products, processes, and packaging to reduce costs and freight weights by over 70%.

How it works?

Our ultra-concentrated shampoos, laundry detergents and soaps come in lightweight sachets, minimizing shipping costs and pollution. The small packet can be recycled once emptied into a reusable dispenser bottle. All of our sachet packages are HDPE plastic and can be recycled by most community recycling facilities. When they arrive to you, you add the water. We don’t ship water in our products, you don’t pay for it, and the planet doesn’t suffer.

Our concentrates are paired with dispenser bottles that you reuse. These bottles are made from a durable, but lightweight HDPE post-consumer-based recycled plastic and you reuse them over and over again, filling them with the concentrate solution and your water at home. Our concentrates also come in containers made from a durable, but lightweight post-consumer based recycled plastic. This plastic helps divert waste and gives new life to recycled materials, and is easier on the environment overall. Because they contain the same ultra-concentrated product as our sachets, you pour just a small amount into your dispenser bottle and add water.

Once emptied, these containers can either be conveniently reused for other uses around the house or recycled. All of our concentrate solution containers are HDPE plastic and can be recycled by most community recycling facilities.

Since 2015, Pure & Gentle’s high-value, high-concentrate products have saved 3.5 million pounds of plastic waste and pollution because of our product formulations. This is the equivalent of filling 13 football fields with plastic!

We understand you may have a few more questions about our plastic mitigation efforts. Below are more details and if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-876-9455.

How does your company reduce plastic from the environment?

We are committed to creating planet-friendly products for a better world. Our carbon-neutral facility – in combination with our environmentally sensitive processes – produces less waste and eliminates 95% of the standard packaging materials you typically see in most retail consumer-packaged goods, significantly contributing to a cleaner, better world.

Why are you still using plastic?

There are only a few ways to safely reduce plastic in the supply chain for consumer-packaged products. Our concentrated product formulations save over 733 cubic feet in landfills each day – that means over 12,600 cubic feet saved from landfills each month. This eliminates approximately 95% of the standard plastic packaging materials you typically see in most retail consumer-packaged goods, significantly contributing to cleaner communities and a better world.

Why can’t you just use glass containers?

Creating glass containers is a significantly more energy intensive and the process has a bigger carbon footprint. Additionally, glass weighs more than plastic and demands a bigger transportation footprint – this means more oil/gas demands on our economy, more environmental pollution specific to the shipping process, and much more packaging to ship so the glass doesn’t break. And because breakage is inevitable, waste costs are significantly higher for glass containers, so if a customer’s container breaks, the cycle of environmental costs begins all over again.

By offering reusable, durable containers made from recycled plastic, you don’t buy containers over and over again – you just fill the same one with the concentrate and your water from home. And due to the risk of breakage in the home, plastic containers are also safer than glass in rooms with tile floors like bathrooms and kitchens. And most of Pure & Gentle’s products are made for cleaning these areas so plastic containers are safter than glass.

Why can’t you just use aluminum containers?

It’s a question of compatibility. Aluminum and the ingredients in soaps – even natural ones – don’t mix. Though you can use aluminum containers for personal beverages and other products, the ingredients in soaps, household cleaners, and laundry detergents contain incompatible materials with aluminum. It’s the reason you’ve never seen cleaners or soaps packaged this way in stores.

What about your packaging?

Our carbon-neutral facility – in combination with our environmentally sensitive processes – produces less waste and eliminates 95% of the standard packaging materials you typically see in most retail consumer-packaged goods. This significantly contributes to a cleaner community and a better world. Our packing materials are even made of cornstarch – you can even eat them!
